Maybe it is just me, but there seems to be a huge shift going on in the world of Christian music. Maybe it is just the nature of the music industry that is slowly getting choked out the move towards social media and digital distribution.
For a long time there has been a lot of what people called CCM (Contemporary Christian Music) which basically equated to Christian Pop music. However, listening to the Christian radio recently, there is more of what I would call Christian worship music. Also, there is music that is Christian and not necessary Christian music – if that makes sense.
For instance, you can probably see what I am saying by looking at KLOVE’s recent playlist:
When I say Christian Worship music, I am talking about soul moving anthems and incorporating the hymns of old in a new way. Artists like Chris Tomlin, Matt Redman, Hillsong, Rend Collective, Bethel Music, and Jesus Culture, plus a plethora of related solo acts related to these artists are all making some amazing soul stirring music that is definitely not pop music.
When I say there is music that is Christian and not necessary Christian music, I am talking about artists who are definitely Christians and are releasing music from there hearts and within their world view, but it is not overtly Christian music. I see groups like Needtobreathe, Switchfoot, Gungor, and even David Crowder now using the moniker Crowder who are making some amazing music.
There are so many indie artists as well that the list could go on and on.
I guess my main point is that I am glad there is such good music available right now, and I hope it gets even better. I am also glad that the topics that are discussed in Christian music as of late are real ones, not candy coated facades.
Here is what I would call a prime example:
